The first Halifax glider tugs arrived at Tarrant Rushton in September 1943

After the chaotic first airborne landings during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 the glider towing squadrons expanded to start preparing for their role in the Normandy landings. Tarrant Rushton airfield was completed in May 1943 and the first aircraft came from A flight of 295 squadron, then based nearby at Hurn near Bournemouth. The first commander of the newly formed 298 squadron was Squadron Leader GH ‘Buster’ Briggs, a veteran from those Sicily operations. The squadron rapidly expanded from the first few Halifax craft over the autumn and winter of 1943, its activities combining supply drops to the French resistance and training the men of C squadron Glider Pilot Regiment in flying both the Horsa and the giant Hamilcar. all begins with an idea.
