After the chaotic first airborne landings during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 the glider towing squadrons expanded to start preparing for their role in the Normandy landings. Tarrant Rushton airfield was completed in May 1943 and the first aircraft came from A flight of 295 squadron, then based nearby at Hurn near Bournemouth. The first commander of the newly formed 298 squadron was Squadron Leader GH ‘Buster’ Briggs, a veteran from those Sicily operations.
